Joy of moving. Learning
I Play and Read, I Move and Write with Ma.Vi.
Conceived for pre-school and primary school children, written for educators and teachers, this text embraces a holistic approach to child development. It offers examples of physically active learning (PAL), following the principles of movement-centered pedagogy. We're on the interdisciplinary planet of learning, where we shape and internalize concepts through our bodies and movement in a unique way. This is an indelible way to grasp and solidify linguistic concepts at school with peers and at home with family.
Two educational methods, one focused on play, the Joy of moving method, and the other on language skills, the MA.VI. method, come together to support children's development. They outline the stages of literacy learning, where gestures and play can facilitate and enhance the process.
The text is guided by the motto “I play and learn to read and write”. It follows a fun-filled journey that respects the essential chronology of Italian language learning. The journey begins with metaphonological games, then grammatical ones, and finally reading and writing games. These games help children assimilate new concepts, reinforce already learned ones, and recover those not yet mastered. Games that fall under the categories of “Learning through Play” or “Thinking while playing”, depending on the degree of integration between movement and the language skill being addressed. Games with words, words that become games for learning, getting excited, and savoring the fascination of language.
The authors, passionate about the Italian language, yet aware of its complexity and sensitive to the linguistic challenges faced by children, hope that the combination of their methods, which led to this work, will inspire them to build their language skills brick by brick. They also hope that this process will be facilitated by embodied learning, as scientifically proven.
